Newman’s Own: Dressings, Drama, and the Sauce

When a famous individual dies, it’s always interesting to see how they set up their estate, if they bothered to undertake estate planning at all. These cases provide great lessons for Estate Planning practitioners both about what to do, as well as about what to avoid. In some cases, even when celebrities take the time to set up a proper estate plan, things go wrong. Paul Newman’s estate represents one such situation. Read on to learn more.

We all remember Paul Newman, right? He was an actor in films such as Hud, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Cars, and Road to Perdition. He was also famous as a race car driver, and businessman/philanthropist. Finally, Newman was a founder of the “Newman’s Own” line of dressings and sauces, which famously donates all post-tax profit to charities.

Paul Newman’s estate has been in the news some recently due to contention between Nell Newman (Paul Newman’s daughter) and corporate figures at Newman’s Own. The twists and turns involve allegations of mental incapacity, undue influence, internal takeovers, and forcibly pushing Nell Newman out of the company.
